Treatment of Type-2 Diabetes
In type 2 diabetes the use of insulin by the body is defective which causes a steady rise in your blood sugar (insulin resistance). Insulin resistance will usually be detectable before the onset of Type 2 Diabetes. The good news is that diet can help decrease insulin resistance and its associated weight gain, which may help prevent or even reverse diabetes.
What About CGM’s?
Our DietMD® program works great in conjunction with continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), such as the Freestyle Libre or Dexcom. CGMs help our patients achieve the best possible results.
Can Medications Impact Diabetes?
Medication can be an important part of treating AND reversing diabetes. Your DietMD® physician will adjust your diabetes medications as your body responds to the dietary changes:
- Biguanides (Metformin/ Glucophage) – Biguanides decrease how much sugar your liver makes. They decrease how much sugar your intestines absorb, make your body more sensitive to insulin, and help your muscles absorb glucose.
- GLP-1 receptor agonists (Ozempic/Semaglutide, Trulicity/Dulaglutide) – They decrease your appetite and how much glucagon your body uses. They also slow stomach emptying.
- Meglitinides (Prandin/Repaglinide) – These medications help your body release insulin. However, in some cases, they may lower your blood sugar too much.
